General Assistance
General Assistance (GA) is a program that provides assistance to
adults who are not receiving, or do not qualify for other cash
programs administered by the Department of Human Services(DHS) more
commonly known as Public Aid. GA provides monthly assistance for
basic living needs such as utilites, shelter,food, personal
essentials and medical care.
Individuals or families with dependant children are referred to
DHS for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
An applicant is not eligible for GA if the applicant has been
denied benefits from other agencies because of non-cooperation,
suspension, sanction, receipt of a lump sum payment or expiration
of life time limits from TANF.
Other eligibility factors such as citizenship,residency,
violation of parole or probation,drug felonies, etc are also
factors in determining eligibilty as mandated by the State of
Illinois. Due to each applicant's circumstances eligiblity may vary
from case to case. Individuals interested in applying for GA should
call or come in for an application.
